Regaining Your Sense Of Purpose After Suffering From A Mental Illness

Okay so I'm not really sure about how I'm going to go about this blog post, I mean I didn't do a plan for it, so I'm kind of just winging it.

When you suffer from a mental illness, you can often lose your sense of purpose and meaning in life. As it slowly takes over, you lose sight of the things that once bought you joy. Having a sense of purpose and meaning in life is so important as it can be the driving force and motivation behind what we do with our time. Without it, we can be left feeling unfulfilled and a little bit lost.

If you're currently in this position, I hope today's post fills you with hope that better things are coming your way. I've compiled a list of things you can do to help you regain that sense of meaning, purpose and belonging again.

My best advice is to take it step by step, day by day.

1) Break Free From Your Comfort Zone:

It's tempting in life to stay inside our comfort zones, where we feel safe and secure. It can be a pattern that we become used to, but the best experiences in life are found outside of our comfort zone, in the stretch zone. Take it at your own pace though, whether that's once each day or once per week or even once a month, just try and push yourself out of your comfort zone and you'll notice that life becomes so much more meaningful.

2) Volunteer your time:

Volunteering can be a great way to bring back a sense of purpose into your life. Whether that's in a charity shop or at a animal rescue shelter. Find a cause your passionate about and dedicate some of your time each week to it. You could even do a fundraiser.

3) Pursue a new hobby:

Hobbies are a great way of passing the time and giving you a sense of deeper meaning. So, pick something that you've always wanted to try and give it a go. It doesn't matter if you're not very good at it to begin with as it's more about how doing this hobby will make you feel. Whether that's painting, sewing, crafts or cooking, choose something that will bring the most joy.

4) Find your own community of people:

Whether it's friends or like-minded people on social media, finding and building your own community of people can make life seem so much more fulfilling. I know it's easier said that done, but you could try reconnecting with someone you haven't spoken to in a while, or finding like-minded individuals on twitter, I personally love the blogging community.

5) Read:

Reading connects you through story-telling to characters you didn't know before and can show you different people's lives and really fulfill your feelings of sonder.

Doing a combination of these activities will help you find a deep sense of purpose and meaning in your everyday life.

I hope this helped.

Until next time,

Beth.
