Normal People by Sally Rooney Book Review

10:00

So one of the books I intended to read this Summer was Normal People by Sally Rooney and I've just finished reading it. I thought I'd write this post while my thoughts on the book are still fresh in my mind.

Anyway, I was first drawn to Normal People after finding out it had been turned into a series.
I didn't watch the show, but I just presumed it must be a good book if it's had a series made out of it and so I went into reading this book with quite high expectations, so bare that in mind when you read my review.

There were a lot of things the book did well, but there were a few things it fell short of. I found the characters to be, in general, to be pretty believable in their actions and their behaviour, though not 100% with their speech. One of the main character's appear to repeat that things are nice a lot and I understand it was probably intentional but for me personally this took away from the character's realness.

You spend a lot of time in the character's mind in order to understand their thought processes and the reasons behind their behaviour, this was an aspect of the book I enjoyed, but I feel as though it took away from the scenes a little bit at times.

This book also managed to say a lot without a lot actually happening, which is both good and bad in a way. When the book ended, I felt like I had experienced a journey, but at the same time I also felt like not a lot had happened.

I did however, really enjoy this book and finished it within a few days and I would recommend reading it if you like romances, there was a strong emotion to the book on every page that I can't quite put my finger on, but it was there, it made me feel close to the character's and made me connect with the world in which they lived. I feel as though this emotion is stronger in the first half of the novel and is lost somewhat at the mid-way point, but it pulls through again sometime in the second half and the ending.

Anyway, I'm waffling on a bit now, those are just my thoughts on Normal People by Sally Rooney, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I think the reason why I've got so much to say about it is because I enjoyed reading it page for page and I'd definitely recommend you add it to your Summer reading list.
